HISTORY
OF MERHAMET
The Muslim
charitable association Merhamet was founded in 1913 in Sarajevo at the proposal
of Avdaga Kulovic r.a. - one of the prominent citizens who anticipated the upcoming
problems. Since that time, Merhamet, along with the Bosniak people, has lived
through two World Wars, exoduses, exiles and tragedies, only to be faced with
a decree with which the activities of this association were prohibited. Following
the democratic elections, a group of prominent individuals, who foresaw the
coming of difficult times for the Bosniak people, once again set in motion the
activities of Merhamet on 2 February 1991. In a short period of time, the Merhamet
network was organized not only in Bosnia and Herzegovina, but outside its borders.
Merhamet associations were established in the neighboring countries and beyond,
in the direction of Australia, America
In Sweden, Merhamet was officially registered on 19 November 1992, even though a number of enthusiasts were active earlier. Having evaluated the situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina, they realized that it was necessary to organize and provide assistance. With the arrival of a great number of our people to these parts, our strength grew and many Merhamet committees were formed throughout Sweden. In a short time Merhamet had over 300 representatives who visited our people and Swedish institutions, collecting funds and other forms of assistance, which were then sent to Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The activities of the representatives and your involvement can be evaluated as very successful, and perhaps, sometime in the future, we can provide a more detailed evaluation using more information, which in turn demands greater input and more time due to the abundance of available information. At the end of this part, it should be mentioned that, from the very beginning of its functioning, Merhamet has allowed inspection agencies to oversee its activities and offer their evaluation of Merhamet activities in Sweden.
